Dioxin emissions attributed to backyard burning
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that backyard burning of garbage in fire pits, burn barrels and stoves is now the single largest source of uncontrolled airborne dioxin emissions in the United States.

Dioxins are highly toxic pollutants with the potential to cause many adverse health effects in humans, including cancer. Even seemingly harmless items like paper and the cardboard used in packaging can give off dioxin and other toxic emmissions.

In Minnesota and Wisconsin, burning of solid waste materials such as plastic, treated woods and household garbage is prohibted by law.
