BRAHAM, MN—East
Central Energy (ECE) highlighted the partnership it
has with its members and its work as their advocate
during the cooperative’s 73rd annual
meeting held Saturday, April 4.
More than 600 members,
families and friends enjoyed breakfast at East
Central Schools near Finlayson, MN, where they had
the chance to learn how their cooperative is working
to keep electricity reliable and affordable amid the
current industry challenges.
During the business meeting, ECE
President and CEO Garry Bye explained the factors
that are causing electric bills to rise and
emphasized that the cooperative remains financially
strong despite the turbulent times. He thanked
members for participating in the state and national
Our Energy, Our Future campaigns, which are urging
legislators to find balanced, affordable solutions
to the country’s energy challenges.
A panel discussion
gave members the opportunity to have their questions
answered by regional leaders in the electric
industry. Serving on the panel were Greg Ridderbusch,
vice president of business development and strategy
for Great River Energy, ECE’s wholesale power
supplier, and Lee Sundberg, director of governmental
affairs for Minnesota Rural Electric Association.
Results of the annual
director elections were announced at the meeting.
ECE members in districts 2, 4 and 5 voted for their
representative on the ECE Board of Directors. In
district 2, Lonnie K. Johnson was elected. Members
in district 4 re-elected Joseph Morley and in
district 5, Jerry Tvedt was elected. Bye thanked
outgoing directors David Deutschlander and Don
Martens for their years of service on the board and
all candidates for their participation in the
election.
The election is one essential way for members to
share their voice and have an impact on the future
of their cooperative.
The board members
re-elected Joe Morley chair of the board.
Bob Thompson was re-elected vice chair, and
Diane Zimmerman was re-elected secretary-treasurer.
Participants
also enjoyed bucket truck rides and bingo. A number
of displays provided information about ECE’s
energy-conservation and money-saving programs.
Renewable energy, electrical safety, vegetation
management and ECE’s community programs were also
featured.
