Each year, ECE reviews the energy-consumption history of our major business customers and compares this usage with several applicable ECE rates. As a result, we might recommend switching to a different rate to reduce energy costs. This is a free service. Before hiring an energy consulting firm to provide the same information, and before purchasing new electrical equipment or changing your business hours or production processes, we urge you to contact ECE.
Minnesota provides a sales tax exemption for utilities consumed for industrial and agricultural production. Electricity used by industry to produce retail items are exempt from state sales tax if the power is used directly in the production process. The exemption does not include electricity used for space heating and lighting. However, electricity for operating air compressors, instrumentation and control systems, and production machinery is exempt. Also, the exemption can, in most cases, be made retroactively for the past three and one-half years.
